2nd XI match reports

Sunday 30th June 2013

Match report, Rumwood v Meopham II, Saturday 29 June

Meopham II 216-9 (12 pts) beat Rumwood 169-7 (3 pts) by 47 runs

Rumwood won the toss and invited Meopham to bat. Skipper Andy Bryant looked in ominous form, before falling to an outstanding catch at cover for 24. From the loss of two early wickets, Meopham built a steady recovery through Gary Howarth and Mick Clark (19) with a stand of 58 for the third wicket. A mid order wobble though left the visitors in trouble at 119-5, before another partnership of 63 between Howarth and Jack Dickety (13) took Meopham close to 200.

Howarth fell 4 runs short of a deserved century, and some lusty late hitting from Richard Saunders enabled Meopham to post a challenging total of 216-9.

Rumwood made a cautious start and at 40-0 from 20 overs, looked to be out of the game. Meopham’s youthful bowling attack included three U15 players, and all featured well in restricting Rumwood. Hugh Bryant’s off spin brought a return of 2-39 from 9 overs, debutant Luc Holden bowled 5 tight overs for 7 runs and James Innes took 2-14 from 6 overs.

Rumwood’s middle order restored some respectability to their total with a good knock especially from Jordan Austin. Miles Tucker bagged two wickets in the last over of the day. Fielding highlights for Meopham were a sharp leg side stumping from Mick Clark and a fine diving catch on the boundary from James Innes.

An enjoyable game of cricket, played in good spirit, and Meopham II move to joint top of the table with this victory.
