Match report, Meopham II v Sheldwich II, Saturday 20 July

Meopham II 272-4 (14 pts) beat Sheldwich II 174-7 (1 pt) by 98 runs

Sheldwich won the toss and invited Meopham to bat. Meopham were given a fine platform to build a big total by father and son opening pair Andy and Alex Bryant, who posted a 160 run partnership in 28 overs. Alex Bryant was first out for 53, walking when there was only a stifled appeal from the fielding side, and was soon followed by Andy Bryant for a majestic 86. Skipper Tony Pearce (36) and some late hitting from the returning Mick Kirby (35 not out) enabled Meopham to post a challenging total of 272 in their 45 overs.

Despite the loss of an early wicket to off spinner Hugh Bryant, Sheldwich started well and at the halfway stage were quite well positioned at 112-2. Leary was the pick of the batsmen with a fine knock of 74 including 12 x 4s and 1 x 6. The Meopham bowlers were made to work hard with Miles Tucker returning 2-21, Hugh Bryant 2-42 and James Innes 0-10 off 5 overs. Senior bowlers did their bit too with Dave Fuller (1-37) and Richard Saunders (0-21) ensuring a stranglehold in the middle of the innings. The Sheldwich late order lacked any firepower and they eventually closed on 174-7, 98 runs short.

With 2nd place Marden losing heavily at Betsham, Meopham moved 31 points clear at the top of division 3.
