Match report, Milstead II v Meopham II, Saturday 7 September

Milstead II 151-6 (12 pts) beat Meopham II 150 all out (3 pts) by 4 wickets

Milstead upset the form book with a nail biting last over victory over division 2 winners Meopham.

Meopham won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket that offered the bowlers a fair bit of support. The loss of two early wickets was repaired in part by Tony Pearce (25) and Darren Deeks (43) with a 51 run partnership. Wickets fell regularly afterwards though, and Meopham paid the price for a lot of batsmen making a start, but failing to convert into a 50 plus score. 14 year old Hugh Bryant batted well at number 9 hitting 15 not out. Critically, Meopham were bowled out for 150 in the 41st over, allowing Milstead an additional 4 overs to make the winning total.

The Meopham bowlers did everything they could to force a victory. Two early wickets fell, both caught by wicket keeper Jack Dickety off the bowling of Miles Tucker. Milstead steadily built their innings but were never truly on top of the tight Meopham bowling. Leg spinner George Tompkins entered the fray and removed opener Hanspal for 32 and then a brilliant piece of fielding off his own bowling ran out the dangerous Nicholls for 30. Tompkins bowled 9 overs conceding only 18 runs. Dan Plumb did a fine job bowling 10 overs for 24 runs, Miles Tucker his usual consistent self conceded 26 from his 10 overs taking two wickets. Veteran seamer Phil Glenwright bowled 7 overs for 15 runs. To add to the drama, a brilliant diving catch was taken at slip by Meopham’s other ‘senior citizen’ Tony Thatcher.

Milstead skipper Mike Annand steered the home side towards victory with a fine 48 not out, ably supported by 13 year old Culum Annand (22). Four runs were needed off the last (49th) over, and Milstead scrambled home with two balls to spare.

A great game of village cricket played in the right spirit by both sides. 39 of Meopham’s 49 overs were bowled by youngsters 21 or under, with 24 of those 39 overs bowled by spinners.
